How to Not Lose Yourself as a Mom

Everyone wants a piece of us. So how to not lose yourself as a mom when you are drowning in the needs of others.

Grab your coffee, in your favorite new mug (along with the matching rebel mom shirt) and let’s talk about life as a mom, momtrepreneur, homeschool mom, and everything in between. These topics cover a wide-range of stuff.

You don’t want to miss this week’s show. I chatted with a mom who started her business at 12-weeks pregnant. She has a great story of starting a business and becoming a booked-out podcast manager.

What Does it Mean to Not Lose Yourself as a Mom

I wanted to really think through this statement. As moms, when we hear a statement like how to not lose yourself as a mom. We tend to react to it and nod our heads in agreement. But we don’t necessarily dig deep into what that actually looks like.

What does this mean and what does it actually look like?

We are busy

It doesn’t matter if you have two kids or six kids. Motherhood is all about changing seasons, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the seasons bring rest. Each season brings a different kind of busyness.

This happens because the kids need us. They need mom. A friend once told me that the reason she stayed out of trouble during her middle and high school years was her mom was there with milk and cookies after school.

It doesn’t matter how old your kids are, they still need mom. There are different seasons of momhood that bring different kinds of busyness.

There are a lot of little things that overwhelm our days

It can range from not so small things like the toddler putting stuff in her mouth (you can imagine that one), or just telling your kids AGAIN to put their stuff away.

How many times a day do you say that to your kids? Put your books away, clean up your desk, feed the dog. I honestly just get tired of hearing myself say these things.

You have all of these little things that tend to pile up and wear us down. When it comes to the big things, they can seem easier to handle. When it comes to the big drama, our adrenaline kicks in, we physically react, and we are ready to take on the world.

But the constant drip, drip, drip of everyday saying the same things over and over again. It just gets exhausting.

But wait, there’s more

So now you are mentally and physically exhausted. But wait there’s more. We have juggling clients, juggling kids, and homeschool.

I want to describe this in detail, so we can think through everything and to feel it as well. But I am not going to leave you without hope.

This is not the place for drama, but a place to talk about the problem, think through it, and leave with a practical solution. You will always get a practical application, and you pick one to try it out.

How to Not Lose Yourself as a Mom

In this overwhelming list that we have as mom, we can start to see how easy it is to lose ourselves in it. We can get lost in all the busyness of being a mom.

Let me add this. It is ok to find meaning and fulfillment from being a mom. We tend to have two extremes. Either we can only be a mom, or we need to look for meaning in a career. Can we just bring balance to the force?

Raising good humans will have a greater ripple effect than any career you choose. Am I saying that you can’t have a career? Absolutely not. I am a momtrepreneur. I run two businesses. You are a mom. And you wear a lot of hats. Your identity is not just a mom, but it is part of your identity that will never change.

Two things can be true at the same time. It is ok to be fulfilled as a mom, but we can easily lose ourselves as we drown in the needs of others.
