I hit my sophomore year, and I was done with math. I was so burnt out, and I knew I couldn’t do any more algebra. The problem was I needed another math credit for high school. So I searched for a different math, and I found consumer math.

This was my homeschool story. I really couldn’t take any more algebra. Little did I know that my first career  job was going to be in accounting, or that I would be offering bookkeeping services in my business, or that I would be doing our taxes every year.

Looking back over the years, I can honestly say I’ve rarely used my algebra knowledge, but I have used consumer math on a consistent basis. In my career, in my personal life, and during tax season. Consumer math is a practical approach to real life math skills or adulting 101.

Numbers are going to be with our kids for the rest of their lives. Whether it is learning to budget and manage money, figuring out taxes, understanding bills, and learning to make wise financial decisions for the future. We need to prepare our kids for life. And Master Books Consumer Math lays the foundation for these important skills.

An Overview of Master Books Consumer Math

The course is designed to teach students how to successfully handle their finances. It is not a bunch of ideas without practical application, but it walks students through daily decisions, like grocery shopping, to major decisions, like buying a car.

It is everything thing they need to know to handle their finances and their decision making from a Christ-centered worldview.

There is an emphasis on budgeting, which makes me so happy. And also how to use it as a tool to help make wise decisions.

Our kids don’t know what they don’t know. This consumer math curriculum is going to start teaching them practical life skills. Yes, it is a full credit high school course, so you can add it to their high school transcript.

If you want your children to be successful adults, then add consumer math to their curriculum so they can start learning all the things that they just don’t know.

Topics Covered in Consumer Math

One of the strongest features of this curriculum is its wide range of practical, real-life skills. Instead of overwhelming students with theoretical concepts, it immerses them in scenarios they are likely to encounter as adults.

Topics include:

  • Personal Budgeting: Students learn to track income, expenses, and how to create a sustainable budget.
  • The Saving Process: They will learn the process of how to save to reach financial goals.
  • Credit and Interest: Teaches how credit cards work, interest rates, and long-term debt consequences.
  • Insurance: Introduces auto, health, renters, HSA accounts, and other types of insurance.
  • Taxes: Explains different types of taxes and how to read a paycheck.
  • Owning a Car: Breaks down costs like fuel, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.
  • Paychecks and Deductions: Helps students understand gross vs. net income and withholding.
  • Housing and Utilities: Teaches about rent, mortgages, utilities, and other housing costs.
  • And many more!

These lessons take a deep-dive into skills they will need in life. It also helps them consider the future. I know they are invisible right now, but helping them understand 401Ks, the importance of life insurance, and other long-term savings tools will set them up for financial success many years down the road. Even if they can’t fathom it at the moment.

Master Books Consumer Math Lesson Structure

Master Books Consumer Math set comes with the Consumer Math textbook and the teacher. The student book contains all the explanations of the material with real-world scenarios. It is set up in a way that promotes independent learning and daily consistency. The teacher guide contains the schedule, student worksheets, quizzes, and tests. Along with the answer key for all of these. Each book also contains a reference or resource section with additional helps, such as tax forms, budget forms, transaction tracking, and more.

The books are also very easy to use. My favorite part is always the suggested daily schedule because everything is listed on it. You look in one place for what to do next, then you check it off and move to the next one.

High school isn’t always the easiest to homeschool, but with the right curriculum you can make it easier to do. Homeschool curriculum that is easy to use always ranks at the top of my list.

Tips for Real Life Skills Success

To get the most out of any curriculum it helps to apply it now. If your kids have a job, then help them create a budget now. When my oldest boys started working, they had to sit down with me a plan a budget. This helped them save for big things like a car. They were both able to buy their own cars when they got their drivers licenses.

They saw the idea of a budget transformed into practical application—they saved enough to buy a car.

This is just one way to succeed. Have your kids grocery shop. Or pull out your healthcare policy and explain it to them. That’s real life experience right there. If they are working, make them do their own taxes. I am available to my boys when they file, but they are the ones going through the tax software and answering the questions.

The topics covered in the consumer math curriculum will have a major impact on their lives. Out of all the subjects our kids will do in the educational journey, these topics will probably stay with them the longest. And they will be used on a regular basis.

Conclusion: Master Books Consumer Math

Equip your kids with the practical life skills they need to succeed in life, so they can approach their adulthood with confidence, competence, and the character needed to handle money well.
