I hit my sophomore year, and I was done with math. I was so burnt out, and I knew I couldn’t do any more algebra. The problem was I needed another math credit for high school. So I searched for a different math, and I found consumer math.

Numbers are going to be with our kids for the rest of their lives. Whether it is learning to budget and manage money, figuring out taxes, understanding bills, and learning to make wise financial decisions for the future. We need to prepare our kids for life. Even if they can’t fathom it at the moment.

When my oldest boys started working, they had to sit down with me a plan a budget. This helped them save for big things like a car. They were both able to buy their own cars when they got their drivers licenses.
They saw the idea of a budget transformed into practical application—they saved enough to buy a car.
This is just one way to succeed. Have your kids grocery shop. Or pull out your healthcare policy and explain it to them. That’s real life experience right there. If they are working, make them do their own taxes. I am available to my boys when they file, but they are the ones going through the tax software and answering the questions.
The topics covered in the consumer math curriculum will have a major impact on their lives. Out of all the subjects our kids will do in the educational journey, these topics will probably stay with them the longest. And they will be used on a regular basis.
