You want a break. The kids want a break. So what’s a mom to do for the summer? Free homeschool curriculum is the answer to summer boredom.
Let’s talk summer. Should you school or not summer school? That is the question that I ask myself every summer. You would think that after almost 10 years of homeschooling, I would have this question answered. But I don’t because life changes and sometimes we need to adjust. I never know what the end of the year will bring, it could be a spontaneous vacation.
At this point, you may feel like you are losing your mind. The kids are restless and you are probably so tired of hearing, “I’m bored, there’s nothing to do.” Mom, I got you. Even though life changes and what we actually do for summer may be a little different, I have figured a few things out.
Time to Explore New Homeschool Curriculum
One of my favorite things about summer is the ability to explore and learn new topics that spark the kids’ interest. We can reach beyond the traditional school year curriculum and take a deep dive into a subject that sparks their interest.
Things like taking virtual tours, trying virtual piano lessons, getting the littles to do phonics and math games, and so much more!
Summertime is my time to cram all the fun books and classes that we couldn’t get to during the school year. At least I think they are fun. My kids may have other ideas. But I don’t want their brains consumed with nonsense, so I always try to do a hybrid summer schedule.
What Does a Hybrid Summer Look Like
It is a schedule full of books, puzzles, exploration, learning how to make a video game (see it is fun), and taking online classes. Their minds are occupied with fun learning (my definition of fun, not theirs), instead of random nonsense. We still do random nonsense occasionally, because we do need a break.
It is relaxed. We don’t do workbooks or textbooks, unless they want to, and if we still need to finish off a subject. We do pull out the mysteries, action and adventure, and Frog and Toad books.
We also use this time to explore interests more deeply, and to test drive new curriculum.
It’s a Good Idea to Use Homeschool Curriculum Trials
One summer I decided to test out an online curriculum. I was really hoping that my 3 older kids would just fall in love with it, and we could switch curriculum. Everyone would be doing the same thing, and it would be so much cheaper. You know every homeschool mom’s dream.
Here’s what happened…one child fell in love with it. Of course, just one. The other two requested to stay with their old curriculum. But my one son refused to look back. He found something that he was always looking for, but he didn’t know it until he did a free trial of the curriculum. We’ve been using it ever since, and he refuses to switch.
There are so many things, especially with curriculum, that you just don’t know until you actually try it out. Homeschool Buyers Club is one place to test these things out. And they are a curriculum selection engine, so they do all the work for you. As a busy working mom, homeschooling multiple grades I need a one-stop shop for homeschool resources.

Summer Learning is Not Just for the Big Kids
My littles want to do everything the big kids do. Including school work. They need to have their own workbooks, but they also want to be able to do things on the computer, like the big kids. Last year, my then 4-year-old cried because he wanted to do the same online phonics program as my 8-year-old. He was so disappointed when he realized he wouldn’t be able to use it.
It can be hard to occupy these early learners, but as a moms we want to capitalize on this enthusiasm for early learning or to be like the big kids. I will take either one.
This summer I did jump in on the early learning with my two littles, and they are loving it. If you are wanting to start your little ones with summer learning, but don’t know where to even look.
