Homeschool Geography: Yes, Teach Your Kids Geography

You need to teach homeschool geography. So when your kids are older they aren’t asking if Alaska is next to Texas.

Yes, I was asked this question at Bible school, and I am still amazed that I was even asked. Homeschool geography is an important subject that tends to get put on the back burner. We assume that kids will pick it up through other subjects. While this can happen, it is still an important subject to focus on. And one of the greatest benefits…you can have so much fun with it. I’ve never met a kid who doesn’t love a globe or a map…or a mom for that matter.

Growing up, my homeschool geography experience was very hands-on. My dad was in the military, so we moved across country a few times. Every time we did, we drove. My experience with seeing and understanding our amazing country was first-hand.

I can’t replicate that experience for my kids because we aren’t moving every few years. What I can do is use Sonlight’s 50 State Unit Study, so they can explore the richness of the United States.

Homeschool Geography: Learning About Your State

Sonlight’s 50 States Unit Study provides enough structure so you don’t have to think about it. But it isn’t so rigid that you will grow to despise it or find it frustrating.

It is a once a week study for 36 weeks that will take your students through everything they need to know about the state you live in.

Even though we are homeschooled, there are certain subjects that our state requires us to teach at some point in our school career. One of those subjects is state history. This unit study helps to meet that requirement.

Every state has different homeschool requirements,  but this unit study will enable us to check off state history.

It is always good for kids to know about the state they live in, then to reach beyond the borders of the familiar.

The 50 States book covers all the states, so your student can explore more of what our country offers.

Sonlight’s 50 States Unit Study is Easy to Use

It is well-paced. You can easily speed up the weeks if you want to go at a faster pace. It is totally up to you. The weekly lesson plans are short and clearly laid out. Mom, there is very little planning for you. It is easy to add to your work from home and homeschool day.

All the pages for the activities are included in the study. Many of the activities include space to draw, but you can also use the space to create a collage. Find pictures and glue them to the pages. Or paint them. Use your imagination and get creative, without too many supplies.

There are plenty of options to tailor the homeschool geography unit study to fit your needs. Sonlight’s curriculum is literature-based and this curriculum also incorporates living books into the learning.

If you want to add some summer activities, this is a great study to do over the summer months. Sometimes it is easier to focus on a subject during the summer. It occupies the kids, but it also keeps the summer slide from happening. The flexibility of the lessons makes it a great study for the whole family.

What’s Inside Sonlight’s 50 States Unit Study

Everything you need to create a notebook on your state. Students will learn about the features of their state, like the state bird, tree, and flower. They will also take a look at the history, the people who shaped that history, and the past mistakes and challenges.

The notebook pages guides students to discover the information about their state. Students start with creating a cover for their notebook. Then move to learning homeschool geography vocabulary words. And so much in between.

The 50 States book, which is part of the package, will give students the basic facts about all 50 states. As soon as my 10-year-old saw the book he said, “I need this book.” The engaging illustrations and pages packed with facts, sparked his curiosity.
