Persistent Homeschool Myths

There are more persistent myths than others. You know they ones that are urban legend now. That are continuously being repeated although they’ve been totally debunked….again and again and again.

1. Homeschool moms are extremely patient

No, we actually aren’t. We just don’t have the patience to carpool, and then do homework after they were already in school for 7 hours. It doesn’t take7 hours to learn. Break down the time that is spent on everything else. They aren’t learning for 7 hours.

2. We are always happy

This is hard, it isn’t always easy. No, I am not always a happy mom, but there is more fulfillment in what I do as a mom and homeschool mom. This homeschool myth that we are always happy, or on the opposite end, that we are just trudging through the day is not true.

There is more fulfillment and joy in being with my kids and knowing my kids than in any job I’ve ever had or ever will have.

3. We all live on homesteads and play in the dirt

Yes, some do but not everyone. There thing about homeschool is we have a lot of freedom to choose the lifestyle we want for our family.

4. We all wear khakis and polos tucked in or dresses

This is a big no. There is a very small, tiny group that may fit this description. But this is not the majority of homeschoolers. The majority of homeschoolers actually wear our day pajamas. We have night pjs and day pjs.

5. You can’t homeschool high school

This is a homeschool myth that needs busting. I am a homeschool high school graduate, and I am going to graduate my son this year. You can homeschool high school. And you don’t need an accredited school either. You homeschool high school student can do dual enrollment, and you can create his high school transcript.

6. Kids don’t really want to homeschool

This is a huge myth that needs to be debunked. My kids would cry and sob if I ever sent them back to school. They would never speak to me again for the rest of my life. Even living in the same house, they would never talk to me again.

7. Kids don’t learn the right things

This was actually my favorite myth, and it made me laugh. Homeschool kids actually learn more things because they aren’t locked into the right things to learn. Homeschooling gives you the freedom to really feed their interests. And they have time to pursue their curiosity.

8. Homeschoolers are anti-social

This is one of the most persistent urban legends. You meet one homeschool kid who is anti-social and suddenly we all are. How many public school anti-school kids have you met? I know I’ve met more than anti-social homeschool kids.

Homeschoolers are highly social. I find that homeschoolers are better communicators and more respectful of the people around them.

9. All homeschoolers are spelling bee champs

I use spellchecker just like everybody else. There are a lot of spelling bee champs that were homeschooled, but not all of them. We all have not achieved that trophy.

10. Homeschool kids can’t go to college

Well my son will graduate from high school with 2/3 of his associate’s degree completed. From my experience, many colleges pursue homeschoolers because of their ability to learn independently, and they are motivated learners.

There are few more myths, so listen or watch the coffee chat for the complete list. What myths do you often debunk?
