Working From Home With Kids…Only A Mom Could Understand

I listened to a how-to class this morning, and the instructor gave the following advice, “Pick 2-3 hours of uninterrupted time in your day to really focus on your project.” Really? Seriously? I just had to laugh. Now picture this in your mind, I am listening to this class, checking email, and my baby is crying in my other ear. I am doing great if I get 5 minutes to use the bathroom uninterrupted. Let alone 2-3 hours of focused time.

If you can relate to this in any way, you have a found a kindred-spirit! This blog was created for the mom working from home with kids. It is not always easy juggling clients, kids, home, and everything else we need to do. And most of the business advice we receive is not practical for this time in our lives. Hearing this can be frustrating and make us feel like we are alone on this journey.

But you are not alone in this, we are in this together—in triumph and defeat.

Exploring Outside of the Box

Life Unboxed started as a tiny seed of an idea in 2017. It came out of a deep desire to help moms explore all of the options outside of the norm. As moms we have preferences, and want the freedom to choose to have a greater role in the lives of our kids, while also contributing to the family budget. This doesn’t mean you need to work outside the home in a ‘traditional’ office setting. There are so many creative ways to make money while still playing a greater role in the lives of our kids. It is possible to run a business while raising your kids. And this blog is here to help you do it.

My hope for the blog is to be refreshingly honest and a place for other moms to realize you aren’t alone. We all feel guilty, we all make mistakes, and we all have those moments of victory.

The posts are honest and real. And at times, a little sarcastic (not mean-spirited) but some days just call for sarcasm. Sometimes when we peer in on someone’s life it can look like they have it all together, or their life is nothing but one long tragedy. Neither picture is accurate. My goal is to encourage you with a very honest picture of being a mom and running a business. I want you to be confident that It can be done and you can do it.

Raising Your Kids

Now for my mom credentials. I am a mom of 6 kids that range in age from teen to toddler. Yes, I birthed them all. Needless to say, it can get a little crazy around here. I homeschool my 5 oldest kids, and then I have a toddler who wants to do everything that the big kids do.

Our kids are our greatest source of joy and many times the source of our greatest challenges. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed by both of these feelings. We want our kids to be good humans, and it is up to us to raise them that way. That responsibility alone can overwhelm. But you are not in this alone…I hope you just let out a sigh of relief.

This blog covers a wide range of topics when it comes to raising our kids. From creating a daily schedule that works for everyone, to curriculum, to juggling school events, being pregnant and running a business, maternity leave for yourself, working with an infant and toddler under foot, and anything else you can think of when it comes to working from home with kids.

Running A Business

Along with homeschooling my kids, I also run a business. I am a virtual assistant that provides administrative support to a variety of clients. I’ve worked with an artist agency, pressure washing company, leadership expert, mental health initiative, author, and a musician. And I have a different role with each of these clients. I have been running my business for over 5 years now. I never considered myself an entrepreneur (I tend to be risk adverse), but I was laid off from my job. Life handed us some lemons and my husband and I decided to make lemonade. More on that story on the about the mom page.

There are so many questions that start to pinball through your mind when you start a business. What should I do? How do I get clients? How do I fire a bad client? What questions should I ask? How much should I charge? And so many more!

You are not in this alone. Working from home with kids around is challenging, but we are in this together, and we will answer all these questions, and many more!

Keeping Your Sanity

Let’s just be real for a minute, some days we really feel like we are going to lose our minds. Things get hectic, overwhelming, and sometimes we just have bad days. But as the glue that holds the family together, you need to take care of yourself.

This is the one of the areas that I need to work on. I have to make a conscious effort to take a break from work, from homeschooling, and from the house. But it is so important to have downtown time, and allow the creativity to flow as our minds work on solutions in the background.

If everything I just said sounds like you, then you are in the right place. This blog was created for you. This is a place where you can find encouragement, help, laughter, and maybe a little snark on occasion. Most importantly it is a place for you to connect with other moms…just like you. Working from home with kids is not always easy, but we are in this together.
