Public School Or Homeschool: Homeschool Is Better?

Let’s talk public school vs homeschool. Which one should you choose. Many homeschoolers will say homeschool is better, but how do we actually know that is true. Let’s dive into the topic.

This is the momtrepreneur life coffee chat. This is the place where we talk about all the behind scenes stuff when it comes to working from home and homeschooling.

Questions Around Homeschool is Better

Many parents still wonder if homeschool is the better option for them. There are many reasons people homeschool, and most parents are glad they chose the option. Working and homeschooling isn’t easy, but we choose our hard.

Recently, there was late night talk show host who decided to monologue about homeschooling. Per the usual, it was a list of low information out of context reasons not to homeschool. I have to say this, I didn’t watch the whole monologue because I don’t watch late night TV. I heard about it.

How do I Know About Public School?

Let me just give some backstory, so you know that I actually know what I am talking about. I was in public school until fifth grade. Since my dad was military, I attended four different public schools during my elementary years.

I also sent my kids to public school. The oldest four all went to kindergarten. For my oldest three, I still worked in an office. The option to homeschool wasn’t available.

My oldest attended school through fourth grade. The second one through second grade. Then the third one through first grade. Finally, the fourth one went to kindergarten, but that was cut short when we all became homeschoolers.

That is my experience with public school in a nutshell. I have a lot of experience with public school and with homeschool. For me, homeschool is better.

The Myths About Homeschooling

There are still so many myths that surround homeschooling. The first thing out of people’s mouths is, “What about socialization?” Why this is still a question boggles my mind. But bad information persists.

Here is one myth about homeschooling.

Poor education

This can be debunked in several ways. There are many reports about homeschoolers succeeding better. For my own experience, when I’ve been in academic settings, I outpace any public schooler in almost any subject.

For my son, when we were working on dual enrollment, we went to the local school to take the accuplacer test. There were about 15 students in there, and I listened to all the feedback (it was a small room). He was the only one in the room academically ready for college in English and math.

The benefit of homeschooling means you can explore more topics and branch out on subjects. Even now, I am taking a college class, and the academic rigor is really low.

Most homeschoolers, now there are always outliers, get a better than average education.

On the other hand, we know that the public school system is failing. Just watch Waiting for Superman, which was a documentary done over 10 years ago. We know this: many kids can’t read at grade level or they are very behind.

There is a lot more on the list, so listen or watch the episode. You don’t want to miss it.
