What Is An Entrepreneur And How Is A Momtrepreneur Different

There are some words that as soon as we hear them a mental image comes to mind. When you hear the word entrepreneur what image pops into your head? Steve Jobs? Bill Gates? Elon Musk? All of these people fit the idea of an entrepreneur. They started out with a new idea and became wildly successful, and are now millionaires or billionaires. But what is an entrepreneur?

Is that all that makes an entrepreneur…new idea, become rich? With the promotion of people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk, culture has concluded that this is exactly what being an entrepreneur looks like. And anyone else who doesn’t fit this mold isn’t one.

What is an Entrepreneur

I came across this blog post describing the 4 types of an entrepreneur:

  1. Small Business: Those who create a business to feed their families.
  2. Scalable Startup: Those who create a company with the intent to build something larger.
  3. Large Company: Companies that start a new division or product line.
  4. Social: Those who seek to better the lives of others.

All of these people have common traits. They are resilient, agile, tenacious, and passionate.

Fellow moms, I propose that we need to blaze a new trail of entrepreneurship. The mom entrepreneur or momtrepreneur. I know there are others who traveled this trail before us, but it is our time now. What is mom entrepreneur meaning?

How is a Momtrepreneur Different

Momtrepreneur

Momtrepreneurs don’t fit the molds of what an entrepreneur looks like. There is definitely a distinction between the mom and the traditional entrepreneur. While moms do possess the 4 traits—resilient, agile, tenacious, and passion—our path is not linear. On this trail we are traveling along there are many twists and turns, ups and downs, and lots of switchbacks.

Being a momtrepreneur means that we are breaking the rules, and redefining what is means to be an entrepreneur. Our culture loves to define what an entrepreneur is and define it based on certain criteria.

I would love to give you a list of 4 nicely defined definitions of a momtrepreneur. But, let’s be real, we are breaking the mold, not trying to fit into another one. I know some moms who have jumped into a multi-level-marketing business, and they are very successful. Others who are working for an employer, but are able to do it from home. Still others who have started their own home-based business taking clients. Just to name a few.

There are three things that we all have in common when it comes to being a momtrepreneur: we are successful on our own terms, we are the queens of our schedule, and our days can get a little crazy.

We’ve talked about being successful on our own terms in a number of posts, and what being the queen of our schedule can look like. So now I am going to give you a glimpse of some of the crazy days.

What is Means to be a Momtrepreneur

Entrepreneur vs momtrepreneur

Being a momtrepreneur looks different for everyone. This is what is looks like for me:

Juggling two clients on the phone while getting dressed to take the kids swimming (good thing they weren’t video calls).

Changing a diaper and trying to talk with the garage repairman.

Catching 5 minutes to create an amazing blog post…and hope it is coherent.

Get up a 5am to start my day before the kids need help with schoolwork.

Giving a spelling test while I am sorting my email.

It is hiding in the pantry eating anything chocolate because I just need 5 minutes to myself. The bathroom doesn’t work because it is amazing how many questions they suddenly have when I am in there.

It is going through the drive-thru at Starbucks and forgetting to order (True story, I did that. They let me place my order at the window.) In my defense, I was talking to my son on the phone about a math problem.

Your 5 year old shedding huge tears because he just wants to be a superhero.

Returning the wipes to the fridge instead of the ham.

These are just a few examples of crazy. It doesn’t happen every day, but if you are having a crazy day, just know that is happens to the best of us and you are not alone my friend.

So tell me your momtrepreneur stories. We all have them, and sometimes we just need to know that we are not alone on this journey. And, that we aren’t the only ones who has forgotten to order at the drive-thru. Right, that’s not just me? Share with us, we need to hear from you.
