Creating A Wonder-Filled Homeschool With 5 Kids: Amy Sloan

Join the conversation with Amy Sloan, from Humility and Doxology, as we talk about all things homeschool and momtrepreneur.

This is a segment of the Life Unboxed that I created as an excuse to meet other moms that are doing what I’m doing. They are homeschooling their kids and running a business, whatever that looks like.

Today I sit down with Amy Sloan and we talk the whole gambit—homeschooling, homeschool styles, how you recharge as a mom, what’s the best business advice—we cover it all.

Amy is a second generation homeschooler and she currently homeschools her 5 kids ages 7–17, so we have a lot in common. She has the wide range of ages.

She writes at Humility and Doxology and she hosts the podcast Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology.

Let’s get into the conversation. This is just the cliff notes of our entire conversation. Be sure to listen to the entire conversation. I enjoyed it and I hope you are inspired by it. You don’t want to miss out.

The Benefits of Homeschool

Amy was homeschooled all the way through high school graduation, along with her younger brother. She shares benefits of being homeschooled with her younger sibling, the educational experience, and the deep relationship that was developed with her brother.

Myth Busting the Homeschool Socialization Ideas

Amy and her husband were both homeschooled. How on earth did the meet, and actually get married? Is that even possible for homeschoolers?

Creating a Restfully Classical Approach to Homeschool—What Does that Look Like?

There are a few layers to this. Restful learning doesn’t mean that everyone is just lying around and mom is always stress free (as much as we would like our homeschool to look like that). It doesn’t mean quiet and slow.

With wide-range of ages and social skills she didn’t want to just focus on intense academics.  There needed to something more central to their homeschool. She didn’t want to view the classical education approach as just something to achieve. That was easy to fail at.

Check out the full episode as Amy shares practical tips on what her day looks like in this restful homeschool.

Promoting Wonder-Filled Learning

This really is a gift that we have as homeschool moms. We are able to be there to model excitement and delight in learning. The attitude of joy and curiosity in asking questions is something that we can show our kids. It is not always easy when you are teaching the fifth kid to read. But we can be excited to continue to learn. Our kids need to see us modeling life-long learning.

Adding play or silliness to your homeschool can spark the wonder-filled learning. And interested in learning anything.

Accidental Mom Entrepreneur

Amy started out working as a virtual assistant, which is a great way to earn money from home for homeschool moms. She sort of stumbled into starting her own website and started the podcast without realizing it. And she started learning how to be a virtual assistant and podcast host, and she pursued this unique opportunity that she has.

What are Some of the Biggest Challenges from Day-to-Day

Seasons change so much. Sometimes it feels like, I did so well last week and this week I am letting everyone down. And it can be really discouraging having that feeling of inconsistency.

Or the mom-guilt that comes with letting the kids watch an hour of too much TV. It is challenging being willing to flow with the changing seasons.

How do Re-charge as a Homeschool Mom and Momtrepreneur

Amy loves to ready and she part of an in-person book club. Seriously, my book club does so much for me. That’s why I did a show on Why Moms Should Join a Mom Book Club.

It was only something that she has been able to attend recently, and she has reached a season of being able to leave the kids at home. It really is freeing when you can leave the kids at home and escape the house for a few minutes.

Conclusion

We wrap up the show with Amy’s best advice for jumping into homeschooling and being a mompreneur. Listen to the full episode to hear it.
