Worst Advice Starting a Blog | Momtrepreneur Life Coffee Chat

There is so much advice out there when you are starting a blog. But there is some common advice that is constantly stated, but rarely helpful.

This is the momtrepreneur life coffee chat. I am Jodie the Mom, a successful virtual assistant and homeschool mom. Yes, I have been doing both for years. Last week’s show was about moms no good very bad day, so I’ve just been going through the steps that I put in that show. Yes, it has been one of THOSE days.

Before we get into everything, I wanted to remind you of the mom journals that I have made. It is quite a collection now, and I am so excited to share with you.

Also, adding to the collection of homeschool resources, I made a timeline notebook. Actually, this was the same one I made for my kids to use a years ago. It has been kid tested and approved. You can get it in two formats: as a bound book or as a digital download. There is more coming, and I am very excited about it.

Cringe Advice Starting a Blog

Yes, this is advice that all digital content creators hate to hear. I promise we do.

1. Just create really good content

Well, thank for that little piece of nonsensical advice because what is “really good” content. Seriously, it is so subjective. This is the number one piece of advice that I’ve seen in so many places.

Please stop giving the piece of advice. It is annoying, frustrating, and absurd. It is the idea of “if you build it they will come.” I don’t think it actually works that way. There is no metric for really good content. It is really just someone’s opinion. And everyone has an opinion.

You cannot base your idea of really good content on anything concrete because it is just an opinion.

2. Just focus on SEO…and then nothing else is said

How is this helpful. Just making a statement, and not saying anything more is not helpful advice.

I am working on show to teach Stupid Simple SEO, it is coming out in July, so you can actually know how to “focus on SEO.”

3. Show up on social media

Let me say this, before I continue ranting. I am sure these are well-intentioned statements. They just aren’t helpful as a whole. Unless you are going to explain step-by-step.

When you are starting out, you can show up on social media. It doesn’t mean there is going to be anyone to show up for. Showing up on social media for my sister who liked my page wasn’t going to work.

4. Just create something of value

That is almost as bad as create really good content. What is something of value? I signed up for a lot of email lists starting out. I wanted to see what was of “value.” Some of these were high-profile bloggers. I was so mad because they were so terrible.

Conclusion: Starting a Blog

If you are digital creator or just starting a blog, hang in there. Yes, there is going to be a lot of advice that is cringe worthy, but keep going.

What is the one think you hate to hear, but everyone says it all the time?

This week’s post is all about paralysis by analysis because I am the biggest culprit of this. I would like to stay in my introverted cocoon, just reading and researching. It is a step-by-step process to actually launch your business.

Cringe-worthy indeed! Hoping to hit my own stride when it comes to blogging. Sometimes we just have to listen but filter out all the noise.
